more to come

you know you're in the middle east when......

1. you ride in a car with a jordanian and a syrian and they are arguing whether pig is clean or unclean to eat
2. you hear "insha2allah after everything" and it usually means "Probably will NOT happen"
3. you get the forceful hand signal out the car window when someone wants to cut you in line in standstill traffic
4. you smell falafel and shwerma on every corner
5. you have yet to meet a man who doesn't smoke
6. when it's colder in your house then it is outside
7. when the gas truck sounds like it's delivering icecream
8. when ladies kiss your check 4-5 times
9. squatty potties
10. when fireworks go off multiple times ever night

Eid Khalast (Holiday Over)

Things accomplished today. It may not sound like a lot, but when you live in the Middle East you count all that you can...

Woke up and went to the dentist. Check. No cavities. Actually thought I had one but since I've never had one before I don't know what they feel like and apparently, once again, I was gratefully wrong. But let me just say...dentist in the middle east aren't incredibly gentle. But hey, i guess they get the job done. Even if they talk abotu you the whole time they clean your teeth cause they dont thing you understand their language. ("how old is she?? 23. wow. she's so small. she still has a baby tooth...i wonder if she knows......... etc etc)

Took a friend to Subway. yummy AMERICAN food. and even got a free cookie after talking a bit with the cashier. what what.

Bought a Christmas tree and put it up and at least got the lights done! On to the ornaments!

Went to work! First day back since Eid. The other coaches told me when they got there "We do not feel like coaching today. It still feels like break! So you do it. Be light". So I "coached light". whatever that means.....and let them go 15 min early. holla!

went to eat at chris and andrews where they wiped together a peruvian dish (two thumbs up) and then hit up rainbow st. for a smoothie that would turn out to taste more like cough medicine and ended up staying on the table at the italian coffee shop.

all in a hard's days work. but glad to have my friend april here from egypt!

GoodBye Warm Weather, I will Miss you

It's that time of year again. Where the weather has changed to winter and I get my annual dose of broncitis. This year has been especially bad in the fact that I've lost my voice for an entire week and the added factor that EVERYONE smokes here. Granted only one of those days my voice was completely gone.I couldn't even tell a taxi driver how to get home and had to use arm signals. hahaha. But I still "sound like a man" according to my little athletes. But man, they keep me laughing. And although I've been coughing up a storm and they all think I have H1N1, they still want to hang off of me like little monkeys when I'm least expecting it. Thanks, kiddos.

I am so ready for Thanksgiving! Not that Arabs celebrate the American holiday but mainly because Eid will begin the next day which means HOLIDAY!!! I'll have 5 days of rest and possibly a little diving in the Red Sea if this weather warms up at all [and if i get over my fear of sharks! ah!]. People tell me Aqaba is a lot warmer....but I don't do well in any kind of cold. Good thing I moved to the Middle East and not Russia! Brrrrrrr....

Visitors!

So October is almost over. Wow. Where did it go? It has started to feel more like Fall. Granted I don't see leaves changing into any vibrant colors. But as one of the Jordanian coaches I work with put it, everything is different-over the course of 3 days people have changed what they wear, what they eat, and are all happy that summer is officially over.

With November around the corner I anticipate the arrival of many guests. Let the good times roll. :) First April comes at the end of November, then MY BROTHER! yay! and childhood friend Jesse for Christmas! As well as Joy and Madi! Can't wait to see you all! And then... once Spring Break rolls around I'll get to see the parents! And Camille! Can't wait to see you, sissy! And possibly/hopefully Amelia!!

Now if only I could convince Carla and Kimmie to come...

Sana Wahed! [year one!]

Yesterday marked one year from when I sat foot off the plane into the Middle East. Looking back now, it is amazing how much that first year flew and how much I love it.

If you had told me just a few years ago I'd be living in the Middle East I would of thought you were crazy. But my love for it grows and grows everyday.

For those of you who don't know, the gymnastics federation was impressed with my work (By His grace alone) and have offered me a year residency to continue coaching. I'm now working with the National team 6 days a week as well as training a few girls at a local school during their P.E. hours. It's a lot of work. But I love when I'm coaching and another athlete comes up behind me to give me a hug. Or the approval they so seek after each skill. Granted, they hate it when I punish them with 40 pushups or make them condition...but it's amazing just how quickly and how much I love my little ones!

Mr. Salaam

An Iraqi man picked me up today and swung me around by my arm and ankle. Who does that?!

3 day Getaway :)

"I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea casting up its waves.  They will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock. Out in the sea she will become a place to spread fishnets, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD." -Ez. 26

So I had a few days off of work for the Eid Celebrations that mark the end of Ramadan. They told me at the gym on Thursday that I had 9 days off before I have to return. So spur of the moment I asked my roommate if she felt like going over to a neighboring country. Sure enough she did and we booked our ticket a day later and flew out on Monday to Beirut, Lebanon.

As you flew in to the city the sights were breathtaking. Storm clouds of thick rain rolling in over high mountains on the edge of the Med. Sea. I haven't seen rain in a while. It felt good, sounded good, and was beautiful.

Day 1 consisted of biking along the Cornish. We rode over to Penguin Rock, a famous Lebanon landmark, got a little rained on, and enjoyed the oceanic scenery. Messed around the downtown area and ate some fabulous Lebanese food. (two thumbs up!).

Day 2 was one of my favorites. We drove down to Tyre Lebanon where we heard the good beaches were. We passed through a city where the crazy Queen Jezebel was from. Got out to take pictures. Passed several old Crusader castles from the
1500s and passed closed to where Elijah gave a widow some water.

But arriving in Tyre was awesome. The morning we went to see the largest recovered/found Hippodrome in the the world. We saw a full size field where gladiators once fought for deadly entertainment and the locker rooms for the home and "visiting" team.

Later, we are lunch of beef and hummus and then spent the day swimming over the ancient city of Tyre prophesied above to one day be underwater. It was incredible. You could snorkel over ancient columns of the city and see old pottery and rooms and Roman baths and find ancient Egyptian/Roman/Grecian/Tyre coins engraved with their respected carvings. It was breathtaking. Granted the current was really strong over the rocky ruins but it made for an adventurous swim. Not to mention the thrill of avoiding massive jelly fish that had swam over from Egypt.

Day 3 consisted of driving out to the Cedars of Lebanon. Crazy beautiful. You HAD to drive to
spectacular mountainous views to get there  and once near the summit of one mighty mountain Cedars were abundant and beautiful. The air was cold but my favorite thing was the smell. It was heavenly! We saw one
tree dated back to be more than 3000 years old--sometime before Isaiah. Crazy to think these were the trees so demanded around the world and used for the building of the Temple Solomon would build.

After the Cedars we had to hurry or we'd miss our flight--- but man it was an amazing vacation!

Culture Experience #44 and counting...

If you've ever lived overseas, you always have awkward "culture experiences". And for those of you who know me well, know I thrive off of awkwardness. But hey, it keeps me as well as others laughing!!

So here's my most recent "culture experience":

I was invited to a sports banquet hosted by former King Hussein's brother, Prince Hasan (or King Abdullah's bro). In any event, Princess Rahma, Prince Hasan's daughter, was there and as always, gracious as ever to those involved with the gymnastics federation.

In any event, this occasion had a high amount of security due to the four members of the royal family present which obviously makes sense. So it was required everyone bring their invitation as proof that they were actually legit invites.

So I get to the King Hussein's Club where the banquet was and was greeted by soldiers. Showed them my invite and they let me through. Check.

I thought that was it.

So I keep walking...

But I hear the other gymnastics coaches all of a sudden yell, "Katie, Ta3ely! (come here)". So I figured it was some important person I had to meet. So I walked up to people dressed in normal attire and greeted them and introduced myself and shook hands. Then I noticed everyone was laughing. Finally I realized what I had done. I had shaken hands with the guards who were assigned to the next role of security to frisk people. So basically I was like, "Hi, I'm Katie" to the people who frisk you.

AWKWARD.

but I did get to laugh about it for a good long while and occasionally I'd remember it during the Prince's speech and would start laughing. Whoops.........

Out East

It's another beautiful day here in Amman. It rarely is cloudy. I have seen one cloudy day since July. The temp is in the low 80's today and tomorrow marks the Night of Power for Ramadan. I'm sitting here about to get ready to go to language where I'll spend two hours with a girl going over verbs and vocabulary. Fun Fun. To bad one can't be fluent over night...

My fridge broke down again. Going on week 3. The repairman said 4 days ago he would come. nothing. He said "tomorrow, insha2allah". And nothing. and yesterday...nothing... and now today. He was suppose to be here this morning. Still no word. Starting to get a bit frustrated at this point...

I have an iftar at the Sheraton hotel tonight with the gymnastics federation. Iftar is the breaking of the fast at sunset as soon as the 4th call of prayer is heard. It will be fun. My girls are excited that I am coming.

So all in all, all is well here! I still love it here! Even without a fridge....

Sunday in ArabLand

Well, we're half way through Ramadan here in the lovely city and it's been a very productive day! Woke up early, reported to Arabic class. Spent two hours learning vocab there. Progressing slowly. Oh well; here's hoping I'll be able to communicate affectively ONE day!

Came home. Spent some quality time catching up with the roomie who just returned from Amrika [America if you aren't quick to figure that out ;) ), watched 2 episodes of Arrested Development, went to the grocery store. Made dessert for a dinner tonight I can't go to, Abed (my guard) came and brought a man to fix my fridge (yay), went to a "meet the parents" night for my athletes hosted by the Princess.

And Most importantly, will shortly proceed to cheer on my Ole Miss Rebels as they leave the Memphis Tigers back in the dust... (insha2allah). Go Rebs!

Shout out to Brian for allowing me to use his slingbox! woo hoo!

Item #1 for today: Meet Princess

Not everyday you can say you met a Princess. But I can today. Never would of thought this would be the case just a few months ago; but I now work for and under Princess Rahma for the gymnastics federation. I'm told she's in her 40s. But believe me she looks like she's 20 something. How do Asians do that?!

Today my sweet athletes put on a surprise show for the Princess for her birthday as well as the Jordanian Olympic Committee, Federation Members, the President of all things Sports in Jordan, Olympic Judges and a few lucky Jordanian reporters.

Over all it was a successful show. Granted, it could of been more "n'sync". But I'm still proud of my little rascals. :) And the Princess loved it which was the desired outcome of the exibition.

Yay for living in a Kingdom!

One Week...

I can't believe language is over. After 9 months of Arabic study I was finally getting the hang of it. By the "hang of it" I mean I could finally understand most of what I hear on the street...and actually enjoying studying and learning new vocabulary.

By no means does it mean I'm finished with Arabic. On the contrary, I have just tapped into it. But in a week I'll have to leave this wonderful city that I've begun to call home and move again to a new adventure. Where Arabic will start all over-new dialect-new vocab. goody.

It will be hard to leave my friends here-those people I've come to love and who have become so much a part of my life this past year. It will be very hard. But I know who holds the future and in that I lay my confidence.
              the great sphinx

So now that vacation time with dad is over :(, it's time
to get ready to move. For those of you who know me well, you'll know I'll probably procrastinate packing until the day before or the day of the big move. But let's hope not...I think this packing is going to be a little more demanding....

                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Before Climbing Sinai with Dad

Dad is coming!!!

I can't wait! In a little over 24 hours my dad will be here! I'm still so thankful I was able to see my mom and my friend, Cierra back in March, but am excited to again have a visitor! Although I haven't been as homesick as I thought I'd be living in Africa these past 8 months, I have missed my wonderful family!

Many of you know my dad. And you know, he doesn't like to sit still. We thought about going to Luxor but we knew we'd just be looking at temples all day in the 100++ heat and to both of us=not that fun. So we're opting for the Red Sea: ranked the 2nd in the world for best snorkeling (1st being Great Barrier Reef), we'll invest in a day and a half of being on the water. I hope I don't see any sharks...I HATE sharks....

After that, we'll take off to Mt. Sinai and begin hiking it around 2am to reach the Summit as the Sunrise rises over the desert terrain. Who knows, maybe we'll see a burning bush or something and God will tell us to deliver some people. Doubtful. But here's hoping.

And of course, I plan to take my dad to see the great Giza Pyramids among other things here in my current homecity of Cairo.

Then Friday, we'll head off to one of our favorite places in Africa together and spend some time together NOT listening to Arabic-but rather Swahili. I'm pumped. Although we'll still be on a beach (more sand), I'm looking forward to my time in Tanzania and what the day will have in store while I'm there!

Memories!

So today my roommate was asked to share an embarressing moment that has happened to here while in Egypt. She sat there for a long time and the only things she could come up with were all things that happened to me.

Here's just a few she remembered me doing:

  • I ordered 4 KILOS of bananas...when i just wanted 4. I had enough to feed a whole family reunion in lower Alabama.....
  • When trying to say "No I can't eat anymore! I'm fat!" To an egyptian family...it came out, "No, I can't eat anymore! I'm tahina! (a type of dip!)"
  • I've been hit by a car
  • I've been schooled in soccer by a 5 year old
  • and I know there are others.... but I can't remember...
Anyways, just thought I'd share a few!
